Jess

One of the joys of working in my business is that you get to see people mature, hone their talents and move on to a great opportunity. Usually, this involves students, but sometimes it’s a member of your team. Nobody likes losing talent, but people need new challenges to continue to grow and do the things in life that they want to do. So I’ve always encouraged my people to explore what’s out there and hope that when they move on that they will remember their time with us fondly and share a bourbon (or Taco)  with me once in a while to let me know what’s going on with them. Happily, most do.

I have to admit though that I was especially proud and sad when Jess told me she had accepted a position with PwC. Next to Tiffany, Jess has been with me the longest. She started as Tiffany’s assistant. I quickly realized we had the right person; she was smart, adaptable and eager to learn.

Nobody has made more of her time with us than Jess. She went from Tiffany’s assistant, to writer, to event coordinator, to leading our alumni efforts, to advising the Ambassadors, and was about to take on yet another role when she took a job in the private sector. Each time she took on a new role, she stretched herself, expanded her skillset, got creative, and delivered on her assignments. She seemed to gain more confidence and poise with each new challenge. A champion of self-improvement, Jess has also voluntarily recruited more people into our evening MBA program than anyone.

We are going to miss her. Along the way, she became the tall daughter many of us never had. All of us are going to miss her travel stories and wedding photos. Jess has been a bridesmaid in more weddings than anyone I have ever known. It says something about how many people love her.

Go do great things, Jess, and don’t forget to come to the Hall of Fame. We will always have a seat saved for you.

Majors Week Spring 2022

Students enter the college as Juniors and many of them think they know what they want to be when they are ready to leave us. The problem is that a shockingly high number of students don’t know what they want to do.

Case in point: Many students will tell me they want to be a finance major because they want a job as a financial analyst. When I ask them what a financial analyst does, they tend to be at a loss for words. They also seem unaware that plenty of accounting and economics majors become financial analysts too.

Tuesday through Thursday is Majors Week in the College. Faculty from each of our majors will hold sessions on what their specialization requires and what most students do with their degree after they graduate. As my example shows, there are many more paths to doing than there are paths to being. So it’s worth going to more than one presentation to see what is out there. Another reason to do this is that students change majors all the time. So even if you think you know what you want to major in, it’s good to know what else is out there.

You can see the entire schedule for the week and sign up for sessions by going to http://business.ucf.edu/. Take control of your education now, so you make good choices and get to the one.
